Learning activities in all public universities grinded to a halt on Wednesday after the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) and the Kenya Universities Staff Union (KUSU) instituted a nationwide strike, citing delays in finalizing the 2021-2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) with the government. The National Assembly has approved Douglas Kanja as the new Inspector General of Police. A seasoned law enforcement officer, Kanja has also received the Senate’s endorsement to assume supreme command over Kenya’s police service. The joint committee of the National Assembly Administration and Internal Security, along with the Senate’s Internal Security, Defence, and Foreign Relations committees, vetted and approved Kanja’s nomination. President William Ruto Wednesday revealed that the government will require Sh106 billion to implement the reforms within the National Police Service (NPS), Kenya Prisons Service (KPS) and National Youth Service (NYS).  The police reforms were proposed by a taskforce led by former Chief Justice David Maraga. Google has won its challenge against a €1.49bn (£1.26bn) fine from the EU for blocking rival online search advertisers. The bloc accused Google of abusing its market dominance by restricting third-party rivals from displaying search ads between 2006 and 2016. Europe’s second-top court ruled the European Commission – which levied the fine – “committed errors in its assessment”. Police arrested two individuals believed to be behind a spate of robberies while wielding pangas and using a motorcycle as their mode of transport in Mombasa. Mohammed Ibrahim Shaban, 22 years and Abdulaziz Ali Ogutu, 19 years were smoked out of their hide out at Utange village from where they were planning their next attack, police said. Some 3,369 fatalities have been reported from January to September 16, 2024 following road accidents.  This is according to the latest figures released by the National Police Service. The statistics reveal that the highest number of fatalities were pedestrians, totaling 1,281. Motorcyclists followed with 825 deaths, while 654 passengers and 281 drivers also lost their lives in these accidents. Additionally, a staggering 16,979 individuals were affected by road traffic incidents during these first nine months after they were injured. Police are investigating an incident in which a 23 year old woman was found dead after she had been raped and murdered in Kamulu, Nairobi.  The body was discovered at a local bridge from the Riverside area. Police said she was half-naked and lying in the vegetation near Kamulu river. Police officers visited the scene, where they found the body the woman who was a casual worker within the Kamulu area.
