McDonald’s reported a drop in profits Monday behind broad-based sales declines as the fast food giant redoubles efforts to win over inflation-weary consumers. All three of the chain’s operating regions experienced comparable sales decline, a significant weakening next to the year-ago results when global comparable sales jumped nearly nine percent. Profits for the quarter ending June 30 were $2.0 billion, down 12 percent. Revenues were essentially flat at $6.5 billion. At least eight people, some of them children, were injured in stabbings in northwest England on Monday, emergency services said.  Police said they had detained a man and seized a knife. Merseyside Police said officers were called at about noon to an address in Southport, near Liverpool. It called it a “major incident” but said there was no wider threat to the public. Police are investigating an incident in which a university student was found dead after a suspected suicide in Mwibale village in Bungoma County. The student was identified as Benson Wafula, a third-year student at Lakeside University. His body was discovered Saturday evening hours after he had died by suicide. The body was hanging on a truss at his parents’ house with a rope tied around his neck. The motive of the incident is yet to be known, police said. Seven people died in a stampede at a stadium in the Democratic Republic of Congo capital Kinshasa, local authorities said. The incident happened at the Stade de Martyrs stadium in the north of the city during a concert by Congolese gospel singer Mike Kalambayi on Saturday.
