Houses have been set on fire in the Icelandic town of Grindavík after two volcanic fissures opened nearby. A volcano on the Reykjanes peninsula erupted in the early hours of Sunday, spilling lava into the fishing town. The eruption is proving to be “the worst case scenario” according to one expert, with the entire population of the town being evacuated. At least 22 people died following a landslide at an illegal mine in northern Tanzania, officials said. The incident occurred at Ng’alita mine in Bariadi district, Simiyu region on Saturday, district commissioner Simon Simalenga said. It occurred after a group of people started mining in an area where activity was restricted due to heavy rains, he told Reuters news agency. Lizzie Wanyoike, the founder of the Nairobi Institute of Business Studies (NIBS) is dead. A family member confirmed to the press that Wanyoike, who is also the founder of the Emory Hotel and Lizzie Preparatory Schools, died on Sunday. She was 72 years old. Kenyans can breathe easy after super petrol and diesel prices dropped by Sh5. In this month’s review, Kerosene prices will also drop by Sh4.82. As such, Super Petrol, Diesel and Kerosene will now retail at Sh207.36, Sh196.47 and Sh194.23, in Nairobi for the next 30 days. A 28-year-old woman has died after allegedly jumping from her apartment building on Sunday morning. According to a police report, Nelvin Museti allegedly jumped from the third floor of Ascort Apartments, Lang’ata. The incident was reported by the caretaker identified as Mwangi at the Lang’ata Police Station. The deceased who is said to have been living alone apparently leaped to her death from her balcony at around 5.50 AM. The report indicated that Ms Museti’s body did not have any physical injuries. Detectives are investigating the murder of a 24-year-old girl whose body was Sunday found stuffed in a paper bag off Thika Road, Nairobi. The woman was stabbed and chopped to death in an apartment along TRM Drive, Thika Road, police said. Police said they are yet to know the motive of the incident. More than 45 people were Saturday night arrested for smoking shisha in different places in Nyali, Mombasa County.  This followed a raid by officers from the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) conducted a Saturday night raid. The 45 were arrested at the Hide Out and Escape shisha joints, where more than 50 shisha pots and over 10 cartons containing special shisha flavours were confiscated. Police are investigating the cause of death of a woman whose naked body was found in a river running through Kasarani, Nairobi. The body of the unidentified woman was discovered Saturday January 13. Police said the body was found stashed in a sack with her arms and legs tied up. According to police, the woman had stab wounds on her neck believed to have been inflicted before she was tossed into the river flowing through Lucky Summer. An Italian lawyer has claimed she was placed under house arrest in Malindi and her passport confiscated after one of her dogs bit a neighbour. Italian media outlets report that the 58-year-old lawyer from Bergamo, Rita Duzioni, is living a judicial ordeal in Malindi, where she is forced into a sort of house arrest after a Kenyan judge had her passport withdrawn. She stands accused of failure to put in place mechanisms to ensure her fierce dogs don’t harm neighbours. A 55-year-old man and his four cows were electrocuted in a tragedy at a market in Rangwe, Homa Bay County. The incident happened at Nyagweso Livestock Market, police said. The livestock trader David Okendo, met his demise after stepping on a live wire while tending to livestock in the area. Four of his cows were similarly electrocuted to death during the incident. Officials said the live wire was lying loose on a wet ground when the incident happened. Police said the trader died on the spot alongside the animals, that he was to sell at the market. The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) Saturday closed Kaplong -Kisii Road for a short while over flooding. This came after the Kipsonoi River Bridge, which connects Sotik and Chepilat, experienced severe flooding due to intense rainfall. KeNHA said in a statement on X that the water levels had risen above the bridge, making travel dangerous. The road was however in use on Sunday morning after the water levels went down, motorists said. A domestic All Nippon Airways (ANA) flight in Japan has returned to its departure airport after a crack was reported on the cockpit window during the flight. The crack appeared in the outermost of the four layers of window surrounding the cockpit. There were no injuries to anyone on board. ANA flight NH1182 was flying from the city of Sapporo in Hokkaido to Toyama, on Japan’s main island, Honshu.
