At least 111 people were killed and another 220 injured following an earthquake on Monday night in north-west China, state media report. The 5.9 magnitude quake struck Gansu province around midnight (16:00 GMT), bringing down buildings there and in Qinghai province to the south. Emergency workers are braving freezing conditions to try and help people in the high-altitude area. A second quake struck neighbouring Xinjiang hours later on Tuesday. Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu has revealed the top ten national schools most sought after by 2023 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) candidates. The CS made the announcement on Monday during the release of the 2024 Form One selection and placement results at Lenana School. At the top of the list is Kabianga High School which was selected by 186,357 learners despite having a capacity of only 672. Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu Monday released the form one selection list for the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) candidates. Some 1,400,329 students out of three 1.4 million who sat for the KCPE examination have managed to secure placements in various high schools across the nation. Machogu announced on Monday, 717,358 are boys and 682,971 are girls. Among them, 42,927 have been placed in national schools with 22,051 being boys and girls are 20,876. Four people have died in a Monday morning accident along the Nakuru-Eldoret Highway. According to the National Police Service (NPS),  the accident occurred around 0500hrs after a Nakuru-bound matatu belonging to Msamaria Shuttle Ltd collided with a 60-seater bus. The driver of the Msamaria matatu is said to have lost control of the vehicle hence the accident. The unfortunate incident occured at Hill Tea Area along Eldoret- Nakuru Road. 2023 KCPE candidates can now check the secondary schools they are set to join in January 2024. Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu, while presiding over the 2024 Form One placement at Lenana School, said the placements were mostly based on the candidates’ choices. “Some students were placed in schools of equivalent standing outside their counties. At least 27 passengers escaped unhurt after a Nairobi bound passenger service vehicle caught fire along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway in Makueni County on Monday morning. The passengers however lost their valuables in the incident, police and witnesses said. Eastern regional police commander Joseph Ole Napeiyan said the 44 seater bus belonging to Buscar Bus Company had 27 passengers aboard when the incident happened at Mogingo area early Monday. 10 people are nursing injuries after an aircraft they were traveling in crashed in Kiunga, Lamu County. In a video seen by this writer, the light aircraft burst into flames after crash landing. The aircraft 5Y-GOK Cesna 208, was at the time of the incident ferrying two pilots, seven army officers and one police officer, Reports indicate that the aircraft hit electricity poles as it was ascending from the Kiunga airstrip.
