Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen Wednesday warned newly trained National Police Reservists against misusing firearms entrusted to them, saying the weapons must be used to protect communities and not threaten them.
There have been cases where the reservists misused their weapons. Some of the cases are pending under probe, said.
Murkomen spoke during the passing-out parade of 705 newly trained National Police Reservists at Magado in Meru County, where he commended the graduates for completing their training and joining efforts to enhance security across the country.
Murkomen said the Government would take action against reservists found using firearms for personal gain, including prosecution in accordance with the law.
“The weapons entrusted to you must be used to protect communities and not to threaten them,” Murkomen cautioned.
He urged the reservists to remain vigilant in their areas of deployment and work closely with other security agencies to identify criminals and ensure they are brought to justice.
Murkomen also cautioned the reservists against incitement and being used by politicians to advance selfish interests, urging them to remain focused on serving the nation and protecting their communities.
The CS noted that the latest group was significant because, for the first time, National Police Reservists had undergone training together, describing the initiative as an important step towards strengthening cooperation and relationships among communities.
He also reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to increasing the participation of women in the National Police Reservists, recognising the women who graduated during the ceremony for their contribution to community security.
Murkomen further said the Government would implement recommendations arising from Jukwaa la Usalama as part of broader measures to improve security across the country.
Eleven chiefs who underwent the training alongside the reservists were tasked with addressing the problem of illicit alcohol in their respective villages and working with security agencies to safeguard their communities.
The CS urged the newly trained reservists to uphold discipline, integrity and professionalism as they return to their communities to serve and protect Kenyans.
