By-Elections, Voter Registration And Boundary Review Top Agenda As New IEBC Team Takes Office

The newly appointed Chairperson and commissioners of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) officially assumed office on Friday, July 11, 2025, ushering in a new era for the country’s electoral body after over two years of vacancy.

Speaking during his first address, IEBC Chairperson Erustus Edung Ethekon said their immediate priority is to oversee by-elections in areas that have lacked representation due to deaths, resignations, and court rulings.

“For over two and a half years, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has operated without a chairperson and members – a constitutional crisis that has left many Kenyans without representation,” said Ethekon.

Currently, 23 electoral areas are awaiting by-elections. These include one Senate seat, six Member of Parliament seats, and 16 positions for Members of County Assembly.

The Chairperson also announced that voter registration will resume once it is officially gazetted in August this year, marking a significant step in preparing for the 2027 General Election.

On the issue of boundary delimitation, Ethekon said the Commission will seek an advisory opinion from the Supreme Court before commencing the process. This is a crucial exercise that could redefine electoral boundaries across the country.

“As the Commission embarks on its roadmap for the August 10, 2027 General Election, it assures the public of its preparedness to deliver inclusive, credible, and transparent electoral outcomes in strict adherence to the rule of law,” he said.
