This year’s Cecafa Kagame Cup will be staged in Rwanda in July, the regional body’s executive committee meeting in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on Monday has passed.

It will be the fifth time the land of many hills will be playing host to one of the oldest regional club tournaments in Africa.

Rwanda last staged the championship in 2014 with the home side APR FC losing to Sudan’s El Merreikh 1-0 in the final in Kigali.

Kenyan international striker Allan Wanga netted the lone goal in the 24th to hand Merreikh their third title to date.

Dar Es Salaam hosted the tournament in July 2018 with Azam winning 2-1 against Simba in an all Tanzanian final to record their second title on the bounce.

Kenya’s Gor Mahia finished third after beating JKU of Zanzibar in the third place play playoff.

K’Ogalo, who last won the championship in 1985 will again represent the country in this year’s edition. The team came close to breaking the 34-year-old jinx in 2015 but painfully lost to Azam FC 2-0 in the final played in Dar.

    About Cecafa Kagame Cup

The CECAFA Club Cup is a football club tournament organised by CECAFA, the regional football body for East and Central Africa.

It has been known as the Kagame Interclub Cup since 2002, when Rwandan President Paul Kagame began sponsoring the competition.

Kagame, a staunch supporter of football pumps $60,000 annually into the tournament, a contribution which has kept it going despite many challenges the championship faces.
