    Early Life

Charli XCX was born Charlotte Emma Aitchison on August 2, 1992, in Cambridge, England. She was raised in Start Hill, Essex, and is the only child of Shameera and Jon Aitchison.

Her mother is of Gujarati Indian heritage, while her father is Scottish.

Charli developed an interest in pop music at a young age. Artists such as Britney Spears and the Spice Girls influenced her musical ambitions.

She began writing songs when she was 14. Around the same time, she persuaded her parents to give her a loan to record her first album.

She later attended the UCL Slade School of Fine Art but left during her second year to pursue music.

How Charli XCX Started Her Music Career

Charli XCX’s professional career began in an unusual way.

As a teenager, she started performing at warehouse raves and parties in London. She initially posted songs online through Myspace, which helped attract the attention of a promoter.

The stage name Charli XCX came from her childhood MSN Messenger display name.

In 2010, she signed with Asylum Records and began releasing singles and mixtapes. Her early music attracted attention from music critics and online publications.

Her major breakthrough came in 2012, when she was featured on Icona Pop’s “I Love It.”

The song became an international hit. It reached No. 1 in the United Kingdom and No. 7 on the US Billboard Hot 100.

The success transformed Charli XCX from an emerging songwriter into an internationally recognized pop artist.

“Boom Clap,” which was featured in the film The Fault in Our Stars, became one of her biggest early solo hits.

Her career then moved toward a more experimental pop sound.

In 2016, she released the “Vroom Vroom” EP. This was followed by the mixtapes “Number 1 Angel” and “Pop 2.”
