    Early Life

Carlos Ray Norris was born on March 10, 1940, in Ryan, Oklahoma. He grew up in a modest household as the oldest of three brothers. His father struggled with alcohol, and his parents divorced when Norris was 16, prompting a move with his mother and siblings first to Kansas and later to Torrance, California.

After high school, Norris enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1958. During his deployment to South Korea, he discovered martial arts, which would set the foundation for his career.

    Martial Arts Career

While stationed in South Korea, Norris began studying Tang Soo Do and other martial arts. After returning to California in 1962, he opened his first karate studio and began competing in tournaments.

By 1968, he had won his first Professional Middleweight Karate championship, eventually capturing six consecutive titles and earning the Karate Triple Crown in 1969. He trained celebrity students, including Steve McQueen and Priscilla Presley, solidifying his reputation as a martial arts expert.

    Breakthrough in Hollywood

Norris gained international fame in 1972 when he appeared opposite Bruce Lee in Way of the Dragon, performing a climactic fight inside Rome’s Colosseum that became legendary in martial arts cinema.

Following this, he starred in a series of action films in the 1970s and 1980s, including:

    • Good Guys Wear Black
    • An Eye for an Eye
    • Lone Wolf McQuade
    • Missing in Action
    • The Delta Force

These films made Norris a household name and a major draw for Cannon Films.

    Walker, Texas Ranger

In 1993, Norris starred as Cordell Walker in CBS’s Walker, Texas Ranger, which ran for eight seasons until 2001. The show combined martial arts action with family-friendly crime drama and became iconic for a generation of viewers.

In 2010, Texas Governor Rick Perry named Norris an honorary Texas Ranger for raising awareness about the law enforcement unit.

He also endorsed brands including Fiat, Toyota, T-Mobile, and World of Warcraft, while licensing his likeness for video games and mobile promotions.

    Philanthropy

A devout Christian, Norris authored books on martial arts, philosophy, and faith. He founded Kickstart Kids in 1992, a nonprofit teaching martial arts to middle school students to promote discipline, respect, and confidence.

He supported organizations like the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the United Way, making philanthropy a central aspect of his public life.

    Personal Life

Norris married Dianne Holechek in 1958; they had two sons before divorcing in 1989. He later married Gena O’Kelley in 1998, with whom he had twins. Norris resides at Lone Wolf Ranch, Texas, where he also manages his business and enjoys a private family life.

    Real Estate
