Information, Communication, and Digital Economy Cabinet Secretary William Kabogo has addressed the hacking of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) social media accounts on Facebook and X.

The breach comes just days after the Facebook account of the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC), a government-owned media outlet, was also compromised.

In a statement on Monday, Kabogo emphasized that cybersecurity is a shared responsibility and urged the public to remain vigilant.

Kenya’s Business Registration Service (BRS) days before had also suffered a significant data breach, exposing sensitive information of various private companies, including those linked to President William Ruto and the Kenyatta family.

“Given the increasing risk in the evolving digital landscape, the ministry urges individuals and businesses to take proactive steps to safeguard their personal and organizational data,” Kabogo stated.

He advised the public to regularly update passwords, enable multi-factor authentication, and refrain from sharing sensitive personal information online.

He also urged Kenyans to verify the authenticity of websites and emails to avoid falling victim to phishing scams.

Additionally, he encouraged individuals and organizations to install the latest security updates, use antivirus software, and back up important data to secure locations.

On Sunday, the DCI announced that it had successfully regained control of its official Facebook and X accounts after cybercriminals briefly took them over. These platforms are crucial in disseminating police messages to the public.

In a statement, the agency acknowledged the breach but reassured the public that it had restored full access. “For some moments this evening, we experienced a cyber-attack on the DCI digital platforms (X and Facebook), but we have since regained full control,” the statement read.

During the attack, hackers posted misleading content, which the DCI later dismissed as fake. The agency confirmed that investigations had been launched to track down those responsible.

This latest breach follows a similar attack on KBC’s Facebook account last week, which was also taken over by hackers before being recovered later.
