Commission for University Education (CUE) has cleared the air over universities offering illegal courses.

According to CUE Chief Executive Officer Mwenda Ntarangwi, the commission is working closely with institutions whose courses have not been approved to have the illegality corrected.

In a statement on Tuesday, Ntarangwi urged students pursuing the courses not to panic.

“We have taken care of the issues of programmes that were not approved and working with universities to iron out any lingering issues. There is no cause for alarm. We value students and don’t want them to panic,” said Prof Ntarangwi.

He reiterated that some of the institutions whose names have gone viral, had not submitted required documents to have their programs approved.

He cited that the commission has a set of standards that must be met before the commission declares a degree program valid.

“Some were not submitted to CUE and in others we used feedback received from universities about their capacities. We used our standards and calculated capacities for programmes against the information the universities declared,” he said.

On Tuesday a local daily published courses that have not been approved by Commission of University Education (CUE), after a report from the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) revealed that 26 universities were offering some programs illegally.
