A man who had not been seen for almost a month was found dead and his body decomposed in his house in Othaya, Nyeri County.

The cause of the death of Peter Ndirangu, 65 was not immediately established by the time his body was discovered on January 25, 2026.

His neighbours said he was last seen in the area in December 2025. One of his brothers said he was grazing his cows near the house when he was hit by a foul smell. He checked and found the house partially closed and rotten food on the table while the body lay on the bed.

Police were called to the scene and confirmed the body had decomposed before moving it to the mortuary pending an autopsy.

The man lived alone at the time of his death. The family never reported he was missing and did not bother to look for him, police said.

In Katulani, Kitui County, a woman aged 42 was found dead on the banks of Tiva river.

The body of Taavu Mutua had injuries on the head and back. The cause of the death was not immediately known and police moved the body to the mortuary pending an autopsy and investigations.

And three people were shot and seriously wounded in a confrontation with suspected bandits in Kathare, Buuri, Meru County. The victims included a member of the National Police Reserve and two civilians.

The gunmen managed to escape and left behind a herd of cows they had stolen from villages in the area.

Police said the victims were taken to the hospital for medical attention and in a stable condition.

In Machakos Town, a suspect was stoned to death over claims he was stealing clothes from a line. The clothes belonged to students of a local college. The body was moved to the mortuary pending investigations and autopsy.

In Kiambara, Nyeri County, a 63-year-old man was lynched after he had attacked and chopped another man’s hand in a confrontation.

The injured man was rushed to the hospital while the body of the deceased was moved to the mortuary, police said.

Cases if mob lynching have been on the rise amid efforts to address the trend.
