Dennis Cholowski is a Canadian professional ice hockey defenseman currently playing for the New Jersey Devils in the National Hockey League (NHL).

Born on February 15, 1998, in Langley, British Columbia, he stands 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighs about 210 pounds.

Known for his smooth skating, offensive instincts from the blue line, and solid two-way play, Cholowski was selected 20th overall by the Detroit Red Wings in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft.

He has carved out a career as a mobile depth defenseman, bouncing between several NHL organizations while spending significant time in the AHL.

Career

Cholowski developed in British Columbia minor hockey with the Langley Eagles before joining the Chilliwack Chiefs of the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL).

He committed to St. Cloud State University in the NCHC for one season before returning to major junior hockey in the Western Hockey League (WHL) with the Prince George Cougars, where he served as captain, and later the Portland Winterhawks.

He turned professional with the Detroit Red Wings organization after signing his entry-level contract.

He made his NHL debut with the Red Wings in the 2018-19 season, playing 52 games as a rookie and recording seven goals and 16 points, which ranked him among the top rookie defensemen that year.

After several seasons splitting time between Detroit and the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins, he was selected by the Seattle Kraken in the 2021 NHL Expansion Draft.

He has since played for the Washington Capitals, New York Islanders, and was traded to the New Jersey Devils in March 2025.

Cholowski has appeared in over 170 NHL games across his career while contributing consistently in the AHL with teams like the Bridgeport Islanders and Utica Comets.

Accolades

Cholowski earned recognition as a member of the BCHL Second All-Star Team in 2016 after leading Chiefs defensemen in scoring and topping playoff defenseman points.

Internationally, he helped Canada West win gold at the 2015 World Junior A Challenge, registering two assists in four games.

In the NHL, he made a strong impression in his rookie season with Detroit, leading all rookie defensemen in goals for a time and finishing third in points among them.
