    Early Life

DJ Premier was born Christopher Edward Martin on March 21, 1966, in Houston, Texas, and raised in Prairie View, Texas. As a teenager, he later moved to Brooklyn, New York City, where he immersed himself in the vibrant hip-hop culture of the time.

After high school, he returned to Texas to attend Prairie View A&M University, where he became the campus DJ and occasionally performed with the school’s renowned Marching Storm band. This period helped sharpen his skills on the turntables and laid the foundation for his career in music.

Gang Starr and Rise to Fame

In 1989, Premier teamed up with rapper Guru (Keith Edward Elam) to form the legendary hip-hop duo Gang Starr. Their debut single Words I Manifest and first album No More Mr. Nice Guy marked the beginning of their rise in the rap scene.

Gang Starr’s signing to Chrysalis Records gave them artistic freedom and global distribution. Through the 1990s, the duo pioneered jazz rap and defined the New York hip-hop sound, releasing classics such as Step in the Arena (1991), Daily Operation (1992), and Hard to Earn (1994). Their single Mass Appeal became their first track to chart on the Billboard Hot 100.

In 1998, they achieved their greatest success with Moment of Truth, which debuted at #1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and is often regarded as their masterpiece.

After Guru’s passing in 2010, Premier helped release Gang Starr’s final album One of the Best Yet in 2019, which included collaborations with J. Cole, Q-Tip, and Talib Kweli.

    Career as a Producer

Outside Gang Starr, DJ Premier built his reputation as one of hip-hop’s most influential producers. He produced tracks for The Notorious B.I.G., Nas, Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg, Mos Def, Ludacris, Common, Mobb Deep, and Dr. Dre, among many others.

Premier’s versatility also extended beyond hip hop. He produced songs on Christina Aguilera’s 2006 album Back to Basics, which debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200. Its lead single Ain’t No Other Man earned Aguilera a Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.

Other notable projects include producing Jeru the Damaja’s albums The Sun Rises in the East (1994) and Wrath of the Math (1996), as well as Group Home’s Livin’ Proof (1995). In the 2000s, he worked with Blaq Poet on Tha Blaqprint, released under his own record label, Year Round Records.

    Other Collaborations

DJ Premier has also been closely linked with M.O.P., beginning with his 1994 remix of their single Rugged, Neva Smoove. Over the years, he contributed to many of their albums.

In 2014, he partnered with Detroit rapper Royce da 5’9” to form the duo PRhyme. Their debut album PRhyme reached #7 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, and its follow-up PRhyme 2 (2018) featured artists such as 2 Chainz, Dave East, Yelawolf, and Rapsody.

He also released DJ Premier Presents Get Used to Us (2010) and collaborated with rapper Bumpy Knuckles on Kolexxxion (2012), an album featuring unused beats initially created for other artists.

    Musical Style

DJ Premier is best known for his sample-heavy production style, often using funk, jazz, and soul records to create gritty, layered beats. He is also recognized for his signature use of scratching techniques, weaving vocal samples from different songs into hooks and choruses.

Citing influences such as Marley Marl, Jam Master Jay, Afrika Bambaataa, UTFO, and Grandmaster Flash, Premier built a sound that defined much of 1990s hip hop and continues to influence producers today.

    DJ Premier Net Worth

With a net worth of $20 million, DJ Premier stands as one of the most accomplished and respected producers in hip hop history. From his groundbreaking work with Gang Starr to collaborations with some of the biggest names in music, his contributions have not only shaped the genre but also cemented his status as a cultural icon.
