Fatboy Slim Early Life
Fatboy Slim was born Quentin Leo Cook on July 16, 1963, in Bromley, Kent, England. He later changed his first name to Norman.
Cook grew up in Reigate, Surrey, where he attended Reigate Grammar School.
He took violin lessons as a child but developed a strong interest in punk music during his teenage years. His brother introduced him to the music of The Damned, which helped inspire his own musical ambitions.
Cook played in several punk bands before becoming the drummer for Disque Attack, a new wave-influenced rock band. When the band’s lead singer left to concentrate on his O levels, Cook took over vocal duties.
He later met Paul Heaton at The Railway Tavern. The two formed the group Stomping Pondfrogs, laying the foundation for a friendship and musical partnership that would continue for decades.
At 18, Cook enrolled at Brighton Polytechnic, where he studied English, sociology and politics. He graduated with a 2:1 degree in British Studies.
While at university, he also began developing his skills as a DJ in Brighton clubs under the name DJ Quentox.
Fatboy Slim and the Housemartins
In 1985, Cook joined Paul Heaton’s band, the Housemartins.

The Housemartins later released an a cappella version of “Caravan of Love,” which became their first and only UK number-one single.

Beats International
After the Housemartins disbanded, Cook released “Blame It on the Bassline” in 1989.

Cook later formed the electronic duo Pizzaman with John Reid.

The couple welcomed their son, Woody, in December 2000 and daughter Nelly in January 2010. They announced their separation in 2016.
Cook has been a supporter and shareholder of Brighton & Hove Albion since the late 1980s.
His personal life has also included a highly public struggle with alcohol. In 2009, he entered a rehabilitation centre in Bournemouth to receive treatment for alcoholism.
He later celebrated 10 years of sobriety in 2019.
