At least five people died Saturday morning after a Bungoma-bound matatu belonging to North Rift Shuttle was involved in a road accident at Kikopey area the Nakuru-Naivasha highway.

Police said this was after the matatu was rammed from behind by a truck that reportedly lost control.

Police said there was another truck ahead of the matatu at the time of the crash, causing the public service vehicle to be sandwiched between the two trucks.

Gilgil Sub-County Police Commander Winsone Mwakio confirmed the incident, noting that it left five people dead.

Six other passengers were injured in the accident and rushed to hospital.

Police said the accident was caused by brake failure on the truck.

The bodies were moved to the mortuary while the injured were taken to the hospital.

Police said they are investigating the accident.

It came hours after another accident left at least seven people dead along Mombasa Highway in Konza area.

Police said 13 people were on Friday killed in separate accidents in the country. The Kikopey accident increased to 19 the number killed on Friday and Saturday morning.

At least 24 others were injured in the accidents.

Police said they are investigating the accidents.
