Motorists using the Kaplong–Kisii Road were advised on Saturday to seek alternative routes after flooding rendered a key section impassable.

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) announced that the Kipsonoi River Bridge at Mugeni, located between Sotik and Chepilat, has been submerged following heavy rains in upstream catchment areas.

According to the Authority, the rising water levels have made the bridge unsafe for motorable traffic, prompting an immediate advisory to road users to avoid the section.

KeNHA urged motorists to exercise caution and strictly follow directions issued by police officers and traffic marshals stationed at the site to ensure their safety.

To ease movement, the Authority has provided alternative routes for affected travelers.

Motorists heading towards Chebilat and Keroka have been advised to use the Kaplong–Sotik–Roret–Ikonge–Chebilat–Keroka route, while those traveling to Kisii are encouraged to follow the Kaplong–Sotik–Roret–Ikonge–Kisii route. Both alternatives are paved.

KeNHA Director General Luka Kimeli said the Authority is closely monitoring the situation and will take further action if water levels continue to rise.

He added that KeNHA remains committed to ensuring the safety of all road users and thanked the public for their cooperation during the disruption.

The meteorological department has warned of heavy rains in the coming days which may cause flooding in many parts of the country.
