France made it to semis of the World Cup following a convincing 2-0 win over Uruguay in the quarter-finals at Nizhny Novgorod Stadium, Russia on Friday.

Raphael Varane and Antoine Griezmann scored in each half to end Uruguay’s unblemished run at the finals.

Heading into the first match of the round of 8, the La Celeste had won all their previous matches – conceding only once but, all that went up in smoke before the well-oiled French side.

After dull early exchanges, Varane lit up the stadium – heading past Fernando Muslera, Griezmann’s free-kick in the 40th minute after Rodrigo Bentacur fouled Corentin Tolisse.

Bentacur was booked for the second time in the tournament and would have missed the semis had Uruguay sailed through.

The South Americans, who had only failed to make the semis once in eight previous quarter-finals appearances, could have equalized almost immediately but Hugo lloris was alert to push wide Martin Caceres header on the stroke of half time.

France were solid in defense and managed to seal the win 15 minutes into the second half through Griezmann, whose stinging shot powered through Muslera’s hands into the back of the net.

The coach Oscar Tabarez’s men were overpowered and outplayed by the Didier Deschamps charges, who will now meet either Brazil or Belgium in the semis.

France’s PSG prodigy Kylian Mbappe, who was the showstopper after grabbing a brace in the round of 16, was booked for showboating.
