If you have ever worked in South Africa and contributed to the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF), it’s important to know how to check your UIF status and balance. The UIF provides short-term financial relief to workers who lose their jobs, take maternity leave, or are unable to work due to illness. Checking your UIF helps you confirm that your employer is contributing correctly and allows you to track the progress of your claim.
Here’s how you can easily check your UIF online, through your phone, or by visiting a Labour Centre.
- Check UIF Online through uFiling
The uFiling website is the official online platform of the Department of Employment and Labour. It allows you to view your UIF contributions, check your claim status, and manage your account conveniently.
- Visit the UIF uFiling website at https://www.ufiling.labour.gov.za.
- Log in using your ID number and password. If you don’t have an account, click “Register” and follow the instructions to create one.
- Once logged in, go to the “My Account” or “Employment Details” section.
- You’ll be able to see your UIF contributions, claim history, and current claim status.
If you recently applied for UIF benefits, the website will show whether your claim is being processed, approved, or paid.
- Check UIF via SMS
You can also check your UIF balance or claim status using SMS, which is a quick and convenient method.
- Open the messaging app on your phone.
- Type “STATUS” followed by your ID number (for example, STATUS 8901011234083).
- Send the SMS to 33001.
- You’ll receive an SMS response showing your UIF claim status.
Note that standard SMS charges apply, and this method is available on all South African mobile networks.
- Check UIF via Email or Phone
If you have trouble accessing your online account, you can contact the UIF Call Centre for assistance. They can check your UIF contribution records and the progress of your claim.
- Call: 0800 030 007
- Email: uifcallcentre@labour.gov.za
When you contact them, have your ID number or reference number ready to make the process faster.
- Check UIF at a Labour Centre
If you prefer face-to-face assistance or cannot access the internet, you can visit your nearest Department of Labour Centre.
- Go to the nearest Labour Centre in your area.
- Carry your South African ID and UIF reference number.
- Ask to check your UIF contribution or claim status.
The officials will assist you and can also help correct any issues, such as missing contributions or incorrect employer records.
- Check UIF Through Your Employer
Your employer is required by law to deduct UIF contributions from your salary and pay them to the Department of Labour every month. You can ask your employer or HR department to confirm that your UIF contributions are being made correctly. This information usually appears on your payslip, listed as “UIF.”
If you notice that your employer has not been contributing, report the issue to the Department of Labour immediately to protect your benefits.
Important Things to Remember
- Keep your contact details updated on uFiling to receive notifications about your claim.
- Employers contribute 1% of your monthly salary to UIF, and employees contribute another 1%, making it a total of 2%.
- If you recently lost your job, make sure to apply for UIF benefits within 12 months of becoming unemployed.
