Mikko Rantanen is a Finnish professional ice hockey forward currently playing for the Dallas Stars in the National Hockey League (NHL).

Born on October 29, 1996, in Nousiainen, Finland, the 6-foot-4, 228-pound right winger has developed into one of the league’s most productive and physically imposing offensive players.

Known for his combination of size, soft hands, elite playmaking ability, and two-way reliability, Rantanen has been a consistent point producer throughout his NHL career.

He grew up in a sports-oriented household and initially played floorball alongside his sisters before focusing on ice hockey, eventually rising through the ranks in Finland’s top junior and professional systems with TPS Turku.

    Siblings

Mikko is the middle child in a highly athletic family of three siblings raised in Nousiainen by parents Hannu and Hannamaija Rantanen.

His older sister Laura and younger sister Noora have both excelled in floorball, a sport popular in Finland that the entire family embraced.

Laura and Noora have competed at high levels, including winning championships in Finland’s top floorball league with TPS, and the trio has been celebrated as the “Rantanen Trio” for their shared sporting success and the competitive yet supportive environment at home.

    Career

Rantanen began his professional journey in Finland’s Liiga with TPS Turku as a teenager.

He was selected 10th overall by the Colorado Avalanche in the first round of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft.

After a strong junior career and a brief stint in the American Hockey League with the San Antonio Rampage, where he earned rookie honors, he established himself in the NHL.

Rantanen made his NHL debut in the 2015-16 season and quickly became a key member of the Avalanche’s young core alongside players like Nathan MacKinnon.

Over his tenure with Colorado, he developed into a top-line forward known for his chemistry on the power play and ability to drive offense.

He contributed significantly to the Avalanche’s 2022 Stanley Cup championship run.

In the 2024-25 season, Rantanen experienced a mid-season trade, briefly joining the Carolina Hurricanes before signing an eight-year contract with the Dallas Stars.

His career has been marked by consistent high scoring, strong playoff performances, and physical growth that transformed him from a skilled but slimmer prospect into a dominant power forward.

With hundreds of games played, he has accumulated impressive totals in goals, assists, and points while representing Finland internationally, including at World Junior Championships where he helped secure gold.

    Accolades

In the AHL, Rantanen was named to the All-Rookie Team and All-Star Team while winning the Dudley “Red” Garrett Memorial Award as the league’s top rookie in 2016.

In the NHL, he has been selected to the All-Star Game multiple times, including in 2019 and 2023, and earned a spot on the NHL Second All-Star Team following the 2020-21 season.

His crowning team achievement came in 2022 when he won the Stanley Cup with the Colorado Avalanche.

Rantanen has also led or ranked near the top of his team in scoring in multiple seasons, posting career-high point totals and consistently ranking among the league’s elite forwards in production.
