Seven senior opposition leaders have strongly condemned the killing of five people during a violent confrontation between residents and GSU officers over a disputed 6,800-acre piece of land in Kilgoris, Transmara West.

In a joint statement issued on Tuesday, Martha Karua, Kalonzo Musyoka, Rigathi Gachagua, Justin Muturi, Eugene Wamalwa, Mithika Linturi, and Toreme Saitoti accused the Kenya Kwanza administration of encouraging illegal land takeovers since assuming power in 2022.

The leaders claimed the government under President William Ruto has presided over what they described as “blatant, shameless, and systemic efforts” to grab both private and community land across the country.

“Land fraud and displacement has now become a rampant national crisis,” the statement read, adding that organized syndicates involved in these illegal activities are being shielded by law enforcement agencies.

They compared the recent Kilgoris incident to other contentious land disputes in Mavoko, Nairobi, and Ndabibi, where communities have reportedly been violently evicted from their land.

The opposition leaders reminded the police and other security agencies that their loyalty lies with the people of Kenya, not with any political regime. They called for an immediate and independent investigation into the Kilgoris killings and justice for the victims.
