Private Security company Kenya Kazi Services Ltd popularly known as KK Security has started sacking its security guards attached to the US Embassy following a tussle on overtime pay.

Last week, Kahawa Tungu exposed a plot by the company to fire the employees who were demanding an overtime pay.

Kahawa Tungu understands that over 900 guards working at the embassy are yet to receive payment for work done after official hours as indicated in their contracts.

In summary dismissal letters seed by this desk, the guards are accused of insubordination, failure to go to work on January 28 and disobedience. It is estimated that over 500 guards are targeted in the retrenchment exercise.

“You are an employee of KK Services Ltd and assigned to the United States Embassy client. You are fully aware of the line of command and reporting structures. You also are fully aware of steps in reporting any grievances you have. At no time have you raised your grievances formally to HR through the grievance process that led to your boycott of work on January 28, 2019 and your failure to comply with orders of your superior,” reads one dismissal letter in part.

The guards have now agreed to meet on Saturday at around Redhill to plan way forward

The security company which was in 2016 acquired by Canadian security firm GardaWorld International owes them at least Ksh700,000 to Ksh1 million in unpaid overtime pay.

This is despite Justice James Rika ruling in their favour back in 2012.

According to inside sources, the problem has been in existence since 1998. According to people in the know, going to court has now proved futile as they read collusion between their employer and those in the courts of law.

The guards are said to take home a meagre Ksh17,000 per month. According to the Diplo Pundit however, the security company was awarded a Ksh3.8 billion contract by the embassy on November 23, 2016.

    In 2017, the guards were on a go-slow demanding a pay-rise.

The company is yet to issue a public statement on summary dismissal of its employees.
