    Early Life

Lukasz Sebastian Gottwald was born on September 26, 1973, in Providence, Rhode Island. He grew up in a Jewish family and spent much of his childhood in New York City.

His father, Janusz Jerzy Gottwald, was an architect from Poland.

Dr. Luke initially wanted to become a drummer. However, his parents did not allow a drum kit in their home. At 13, he instead taught himself to play guitar using his older sister’s instrument.

He later attended the Manhattan School of Music for two years.

    Dr. Luke’s Early Music Career

In 1996, Gottwald joined the band on Saturday Night Live as lead guitarist. He held the position for about a decade, leaving after the 2006-2007 season.

While working on the television show, he also developed his career as a producer and remixer. He worked with artists such as Arrested Development and Nappy Roots and released his own music under the name Kasz.

He eventually created Kasz Money Publishing to manage his songwriting work and founded Prescription Songs, a company focused on developing songwriters and music talent.

Several writers associated with his company, including Kesha and Katy Perry, went on to become major pop stars.

    Breakthrough as a Producer

One of the most important relationships in Dr. Luke’s career was his partnership with Swedish producer and songwriter Max Martin.

The two met while Dr. Luke was working as a DJ at a house party. Martin became an important mentor and collaborator.

Their partnership helped produce some of the defining pop songs of the 2000s.

Dr. Luke’s major breakthrough came with Kelly Clarkson’s 2004 hit “Since U Been Gone,” which he co-wrote and co-produced with Max Martin. He and Martin also worked together on Clarkson’s “Behind These Hazel Eyes.”

His success continued with songs including P!nk’s “Who Knew” and “U + Ur Hand,” Avril Lavigne’s “Girlfriend,” Katy Perry’s “I Kissed a Girl” and “Hot n Cold,” and Britney Spears’ “Circus.”

The string of hits helped establish Dr. Luke as one of the leading producers in pop music.

In 2009, Billboard named him among its Top 10 Producers of the Decade. The following year, he was named Songwriter of the Year at the ASCAP Pop Music Awards.

    “Wrecking Ball” by Miley Cyrus

    “Tik Tok” by Kesha

    “Dark Horse” by Katy Perry

    “Dynamite” by Taio Cruz

    “Right Round” by Flo Rida

These songs have generated income from multiple sources, including songwriting royalties, publishing rights, licensing and recording revenues.

    Kemosabe Records

Dr. Luke expanded his business interests beyond producing music.

In 2011, he partnered with Sony Music Entertainment to establish Kemosabe Records. The arrangement gave him significant control over signing and developing artists.

The label became associated with several artists, including Kesha.

However, his relationship with Sony later became complicated following legal disputes involving Kesha. Sony subsequently distanced itself from Dr. Luke, and he was removed from the company’s official website in 2017.

    Kesha Legal Dispute

Dr. Luke’s career has also been affected by a highly publicized legal dispute with singer Kesha.

In 2014, Kesha sued Dr. Luke, alleging sexual assault, battery, gender violence and harassment. Dr. Luke denied the allegations and filed a countersuit.

The dispute became a major story in the music industry and continued for several years before the parties eventually settled their lawsuits out of court.

Despite the controversy, Dr. Luke continued working as a producer and songwriter.

    Later Career

Dr. Luke has continued to work with major artists across different generations of pop music.

His production and songwriting credits have included artists such as Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus, Britney Spears, Maroon 5, Doja Cat, Kim Petras, One Direction, Ne-Yo, Big Boi and others.

His work has continued to generate income through songwriting and production royalties, making his extensive catalogue an important part of his wealth.

    Real Estate

Dr. Luke has also invested part of his fortune in luxury real estate.

In 2008, he purchased a mansion in the Hollywood Hills for about $4.7 million. He later attempted to sell the property for substantially more. The home was listed for $12.8 million in 2018, although it did not sell at that price.

The property was subsequently listed again in September 2024 for about $8 million.

Dr. Luke also owns a Malibu oceanfront property.

In April 2012, he paid nearly $8 million for the mansion, which was previously owned by Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne. The approximately 4,500-square-foot property has five bedrooms and six bathrooms.

In September 2024, the Malibu home was listed for approximately $11.995 million.
