    Mackenzie Crook, born Paul James Crook on September 29, 1971, in Maidstone, Kent, England, is a versatile English actor, comedian, director, and writer.

    He rose to prominence with his distinctive lanky frame, expressive features, and knack for portraying awkward or eccentric characters.

    Crook has built a respected career across television, film, and theatre, earning acclaim for both his comedic timing and more dramatic stage work.

    He is the son of Michael Crook, a British Airways employee, and Sheila Crook, a hospital manager.

    Mackenzie has one sister, namely Zoe Crook.

    She is a musician who has been involved with the London electro band Paw Paw, for which Mackenzie directed a music video.

    Career

    Crook began his career in comedy, appearing in stand-up and sketch shows before landing his breakthrough role as the socially inept Gareth Keenan in the BBC sitcom The Office (2001–2003).

    The show brought him international recognition and showcased his ability to blend cringe comedy with vulnerability.

    He transitioned to Hollywood with the role of Ragetti, the one-eyed pirate, in the Pirates of the Caribbean film series (2003–2007), appearing in several installments alongside Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom.

    Further television credits include playing the wildling Orell in Game of Thrones.

    In 2014, Crook created, wrote, directed, and starred in the BBC sitcom Detectorists, a gentle comedy about metal-detecting enthusiasts that earned critical praise for its warmth and understated humor.

    He has also taken on the title role in Worzel Gummidge (2019–2022), which he wrote and directed, and continued creating new projects such as the sitcom Small Prophets.

    On stage, notable performances include Konstantin in The Seagull and a Tony Award-nominated turn in Jez Butterworth’s Jerusalem.

    Accolades

    For Detectorists, Mackenzie won the BAFTA Television Craft Award for Best Writing in a Comedy Series in 2015, while the series itself won the BAFTA Television Award for Best Situation Comedy.

    He has accumulated multiple wins and nominations overall, reflecting his success as both a performer and a writer-director.

    His stage work earned a Tony nomination, and he continues to be recognized for his contributions to British comedy and television.
