A 28-year-old man died after a tyre reportedly slipped from a pickup truck and struck him on the head along Uganda Road in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County.

The incident happened at about 5.20pm on Tuesday at the National Oil Petrol Station area, according to police.

Police said the pickup truck had loaded tyres and was leaving the station when one tyre allegedly slid, forcing the rear door open.

The deceased, identified as Benjamin Otieno, was seated on the back door when he fell to the ground and the falling tyre hit him on the head, causing severe injuries.

The driver rushed him to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital where he died while receiving treatment.

The vehicle was detained at the station pending investigations.

Elsewhere, police in Mwea East, Kirinyaga County, launched investigations after the body of an unidentified man was spotted floating in River Rupingazi at Mugamba Ciura South.

According to police, the incident was reported at about 7.30pm on Tuesday.

Officials rushed to the scene and established that the lifeless body of an unknown African adult male was trapped between rocks at the centre of the river.

Police said the body was naked and efforts to retrieve it were unsuccessful due to darkness.

Divers from Embu County were alerted to assist in the retrieval operation after it emerged that Kirinyaga County had no available divers at the time.

The scene was preserved pending retrieval of the body and further investigations.

And police in Isiolo recovered a G3 rifle that had been stolen during a deadly bandit attack targeting National Police Reservists (NPR) officers in the county.

According to police, the firearm — a G3 rifle with one magazine and two rounds of 7.62 x 51mm ammunition — was surrendered on Tuesday afternoon by Samburu elders from the Kolowash area.

Authorities said the rifle had been stolen during an earlier ambush in which suspected armed Samburu bandits attacked NPR officers, fatally shooting officer Henry Longor Morukapel and injuring his colleague, who sustained gunshot wounds.

During the attack, the assailants reportedly escaped with the slain officer’s G3 rifle and 40 rounds of ammunition.

Police said investigations are ongoing as officers pursue the suspects behind the attack.
