Nairobi Sets Up Six Fan Zones For Sunday’s Harambee Stars CHAN Clash

The Kenya Local Organizing Committee (LOC) and the national government have confirmed six official fan zones in Nairobi ahead of the Harambee Stars’ crucial Group A match against Zambia in the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) PAMOJA 2024 on Sunday, 17 August.

The match is scheduled to kick off at 3:00 pm at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

The official fan zones will be set up in various parts of Nairobi, including Uhuru Park in the city centre, Lucky Summer–Ngomongo near the stadium, Dandora Stadium, Utalii at Stima Club, Jacaranda Grounds, and Kibera DC Grounds.

Authorities have said that these fan parks are meant to give an opportunity to fans without stadium tickets to watch the game in a secure and festive environment. Only spectators with valid electronic tickets will be admitted into Kasarani Stadium.

To tighten security and improve crowd management, the LOC, Football Kenya Federation (FKF) and CAF have announced enhanced measures such as additional security checks, ticket barcode scanning, and systems to detect counterfeit tickets.

Meanwhile, motorists in Nairobi should expect partial and full road closures on Sunday due to the major football event at Kasarani. Traffic Commandant Joseph Chirchir said routes around the stadium and other key entry corridors will be affected throughout the day.

Aerodrome Road will be closed between Madaraka and Bunyala roundabouts, one lane of Lang’ata Road will be closed between Madaraka and Lusaka roundabouts, and a similar lane closure will apply along Mombasa Road from Lusaka to Bunyala.

Motorists are advised to use Likoni Road via Enterprise Road or the Southern Bypass instead of Mombasa Road when heading to the city centre. Those using Lang’ata Road should opt for Raila Odinga Road or Muhoho Road through Mbagathi Roundabout.

Traffic along Thika Road will also be disrupted, with vehicles from town to Thika encouraged to use Kiambu Road via Exit 4. Drivers from Thika, Juja or Ruiru heading to the CBD are advised to use Kiambu Road or the Northern Bypass. Those from Githurai are asked to use the Githurai 44–Kiambu Road route. Fans without access passes going to Kasarani should use the service lanes at Exit 7 and Exit 8.

Police officers will be deployed along major routes to guide motorists and ensure smooth movement. Chirchir urged all road users to cooperate and warned that offenders risk facing traffic penalties.

The CHAN tournament has attracted thousands of fans across the city, and excitement continues to build as Harambee Stars remain top of Group A with seven points ahead of the Zambia clash.
