Football Kenya Federation (FKF) president Nick Mwendwa has passed integrity checks and will contest for the vacant FIFA Council Member position for the Anglophone grouping.

Nick, 39, will face opposition from fellow East African Leodegar Tenga of Tanzania, South Africa’s Danny Jordan, Elvis Chetty of Seychelles and Walter Nyamilandu of Malawi.

The vote will take place on 28 September 2018 during the Confederation of African Football (CAF) General Assembly in Cairo, Egypt.

The seat fell vacant following the suspension of former Ghana Football Association boss and CAF 1st Vice-president Kwesi Nyantakyi over corruption allegations.

Efforts by Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) president and CAF 1st Vice-president Amaju Pinnick to arrive at a compromise candidate to replace Kwesi failed.

Nick, who is trying his hands in African football politics for the first time, had already started making inroads at CAF and was appointed committee member of the Championship of African Nations (CHAN).

To land this job that attracts up-to $300,000 per year from FIFA in form allowances among other benefits, Nick must work hard and prove his influence amongst his peers.

Apart from Moses Magogo of Uganda and Leodegar Tenga who are co-opted members of the CAF Executive, no East African holds an influential position at CAF or FIFA.

Magogo, who was also salivating for the post dropped out of the race alongside Adam Methethwa of Swaziland.
