President William Ruto has hailed Kenya’s successful bid to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships, describing the achievement as a historic victory for the country and Africa.
In a statement celebrating the announcement, Ruto said Kenya had won the right to stage the premier global athletics competition, becoming the first African nation to host the championships.
“The World Athletics Championships are coming home!” Ruto said.
The President described the hosting rights as a significant milestone for Kenya’s athletics heritage and a tribute to generations of athletes who have established the country as a global powerhouse in track, road running and cross country.
“This is Kenya’s moment, Africa’s moment and a victory for generations of athletes who made our nation synonymous with excellence on the track, on the road and cross country,” he said.
Ruto congratulated the Kenyan bid team, Athletics Kenya, the Ministry of Sports, Youth Affairs and the Creative Economy, athletes and all those who worked to secure the hosting rights.
He also thanked World Athletics for choosing Kenya, pledging that the country would deliver a championship that reflects its sporting legacy.
“We will honour that confidence by delivering an unforgettable championship worthy of our athletes, our country and our continent,” Ruto said.
The award is expected to strengthen Kenya’s position as a leading athletics destination and provide an opportunity to showcase the country’s sporting talent to a global audience.
Kenya has a long history of producing world-class athletes, particularly in middle- and long-distance running, and has previously hosted major international competitions, including the 2017 World Athletics Under-18 Championships and the 2021 World Athletics Under-20 Championships in Nairobi.
