    Ruto, Raila Praise Harambee Stars After Brave Draw Against Angola

    President William Ruto on Thursday led the nation in congratulating Harambee Stars after a spirited performance saw the 10-man side hold Angola to a 1-1 draw in a dramatic 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) Group A clash at Kasarani Stadium.

    Austin Odhiambo scored from the penalty spot to cancel out Joaqium Paciencia’s early goal, keeping Kenya top of Group A with four points — one ahead of Morocco and DR Congo. In the other group match played at Nyayo Stadium, DR Congo beat Zambia 2-0.

    The Kasarani showdown was fast-paced from the start, with both goals coming in the opening 10 minutes. The game also saw three Video Assistant Referee (VAR) decisions that sparked mixed reactions from the home crowd.

    President Ruto hailed the players’ determination, especially after being reduced to 10 men early in the game.

    “What a valiant display of skill and endurance by our gallant Harambee Stars! Reduced to 10 men early, you stood tall, fought hard, and covered every blade of grass to hold Angola. What you displayed was not just football — it was the Kenyan spirit on show for Africa and the world. Courage. Grit. Patriotism,” he said.

    The president promised to pay them Sh500,000 each, including the technical bench.

    If they could have won, everyone could have pocketed Sh1 million.

    Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who was in the stadium, also praised the team.

    “What a night for our country! The energy was palpable from the moment the players stepped onto the pitch to the final whistle. To see our young, homegrown talent rise to the occasion against a strong team like Angola is incredibly inspiring. The Harambee Stars have put smiles on the faces of every Kenyan,” he said.

    National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula was also at Kasarani and congratulated the team for their fighting spirit.

    Kenya will play Morocco on Sunday at 7 pm.
