Police are hunting for gunmen who attacked a senior police officer and robbed him of his pistol in Limuru, Kiambu County.

The inspector of police based at Limuru police station said he was on Sunday February 16 morning on his way to Ngarariga police station in a private car when he was attacked by three gunmen.

He was to visit the station for inspection and on reaching Njira Njeru area near Kwa Rufus shopping center he was accosted by three unknown men who were on board a motorcycle of unknown registration number and armed with a suspected AK 47 rifle.

He said the men blocked him at gunpoint and ordered him to surrender.

He said in the confusion, his car veered off the road and landed in a ditch as the gang followed him there.

They ordered him out of the car at gunpoint and took his firearm make Jericho which was loaded with 15 rounds of live ammunition and sped off.

During the incident, the officer escaped unhurt, police said.

A hunt is ongoing on the gang, police said. Police suspect the gang had trailed the officer before striking.
