Almost 90 percent of 2017 KCSE Candidates did not get the C Plus cut off mark required for one to gain entry into the Country’s University system.

Those who got A plain improved by a single student to 142 up from last year’s 141 while while those with A minus reduced by half.

The same failure en masse witnessed last year has recurred this year with the Education CS Fred Matiang’i saying that most students did not follow instructions and questions that required one to discuss or explain were simply stated.

Language skills has also been cited as part of the massive failure as allegedly a huge number of students answered questions in ‘sheng’ and other colloquial languages.

This year, 611,952 candidates sat the examination, compared with 574,125 candidates in 2016.

The performance was better than last year because 15.4 per cent, or 88,929 students, attained C+ and above all of whom were absorbed into local universities.

But the Ministry hopes that the Government’s initiative to give text books to students across the Country will go along way in improving subsequent results in the coming examinations.
