Teams are investigating an incident where a suspect died while in police custody at the Komwamu police post, Isebania, Migori County.

Police said the suspect died by suicide.

The incident happened on Friday September 26, 2025 evening, police said.

Police said they had booked Allan Kamau Kimani, 41 for malicious damage to property as complained by a relative.

He was detained alone at the Komwamu police post cells where he was found hanging on a window grill with a shirt tied around his neck.

Police claim he used his shirt to hang himself. The motive of the incident is yet to be known.

Senior police officers visited the scene and confirmed he was being held at the post pending transfer to Isebania when the incident happened.

Officials at the Independent Policing Oversight Authority were informed of the incident and announced an investigation had been launched into the same.

This is the latest such incident to happen in a police custody in a month. Similar incidents were reported this month in Mombasa and Kitale police commands prompting an investigation.

Such deaths are investigated by IPOA.

Meanwhile, police in Makunga, Kakamega County are investigating an incident where a minor aged 10 died after being assaulted by his neighbour.

The death sparked rage from locals who set the suspect’s houses, police said.

Locals reported that the suspect was last seen talking to the minor who was a pupil at the Bushiri Primary School before he assaulted him. The motive of the incident was not known immediately.

The body of the boy was found lying in the suspect’s compound with injuries in the head, legs and hands, police said.

The suspect escaped the scene and police said on Sunday efforts to trace him were ongoing following the September 25, 2025 incident.

The body was moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy.
