    Rise to Fame with SWV

Tamara Johnson-George’s journey to stardom began in Brooklyn, New York, where she teamed up with Cheryl “Coko” Gamble and Leanne “Lelee” Lyons to form SWV in 1990. The trio started by performing at local talent shows and church events before signing a record deal with RCA Records.

In 1992, SWV released their debut album It’s About Time, which became a massive commercial success, eventually going multi-platinum. The group quickly became one of the most influential R&B acts of the decade with hit singles such as “I’m So Into You,” “Right Here (Human Nature Remix),” and their signature song “Weak,” which topped the Billboard Hot 100.

SWV’s unique blend of new jack swing, hip-hop, and soulful harmonies defined the sound of early 1990s R&B. Johnson-George, performing under the name Taj, played a key role in the group’s vocal arrangements and stage presence.

The group followed up with successful albums including New Beginning (1996) and Release Some Tension (1997). Despite selling over 25 million records worldwide, internal conflicts led to SWV disbanding in 1998, bringing their initial run to an end.

    Reality Show Success

After SWV’s breakup, Johnson-George expanded her public profile beyond music. In 2009, she appeared as a contestant on CBS’s “Survivor: Tocantins” (Season 18). Competing in Brazil’s highlands, she impressed viewers with her physical endurance, strategic gameplay, and mental toughness, ultimately finishing fourth overall.

Her appearance on Survivor introduced her to a new audience and showcased a side of her personality that fans had never seen—competitive, resilient, and adaptable.

Following SWV’s reunion, Johnson-George starred in the WE tv reality series “SWV Reunited” in 2014. The show documented the group’s return to music, their personal growth, and the challenges of balancing careers, friendships, and family life.

    Writing Career

In 2007, Tamara Johnson-George added “author” to her résumé with the release of “Player HateHER: How to Avoid the Beat Down and Live in a Drama-Free World,” co-written with Katrina R. Chambers. The book offered candid advice on relationships, self-respect, and avoiding unnecessary conflict.

Her writing reflected her straightforward personality and drew from real-life experiences in both the entertainment industry and personal relationships. The book further solidified her reputation as a relatable and insightful voice for women.

    Marriage to Eddie George

In 2004, Tamara married former NFL running back Eddie George, forming one of music and sports’ most recognizable couples. Eddie enjoyed a successful football career, most notably with the Tennessee Titans, before retiring from the NFL.

Together, the couple has built a family that includes their son Eriq, as well as Eddie’s son Jaire from a previous relationship. Despite the pressures of public life, their marriage has endured, with both partners supporting each other’s professional transitions—from music and football to media, business, and coaching.

    SWV Reunion

SWV officially reunited in the mid-2000s and released their comeback album “I Missed Us” in 2012, which earned a Grammy nomination for Best Traditional R&B Performance. The group later released Still in 2016, proving their sound remained relevant decades after their debut.

For Johnson-George, the reunion marked a full-circle moment, allowing her to reconnect with her musical roots while bringing maturity and experience to the group’s new chapter. SWV remains widely regarded as one of the most influential female R&B groups of all time, with their impact evident in many contemporary artists.

    Tennessee Home Foreclosure Scare

In 2012, Eddie and Tamara Johnson-George made headlines when their 8,500-square-foot Tennessee home faced foreclosure. The couple had purchased the property in 2007 for $1.675 million, near the peak of the real estate market.

Following advice from an accountant, they intentionally missed mortgage payments in hopes of renegotiating loan terms. Instead, the bank moved toward foreclosure. Ultimately, the couple resolved the dispute, retained ownership of the home, and avoided auction. Today, the property is estimated to be worth around $3 million.
