    Early Life

Tracii Guns was born on January 20, 1966, in Los Angeles, California. Growing up in the heart of the city’s rock scene, he was exposed early to guitar-driven music and quickly gravitated toward the instrument. Influenced by legends such as Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, and Michael Schenker, Guns developed a style that blended blues feel with heavy metal intensity.

By his teenage years, he was already a skilled guitarist. In 1983, at just 17 years old, he formed the first version of L.A. Guns, laying the groundwork for what would become a staple band of the Sunset Strip era.

    Guns N’ Roses

One of the most talked-about chapters in Tracii Guns’ career came in 1985, when his band L.A. Guns merged with Hollywood Rose, led by Axl Rose. The resulting group was named Guns N’ Roses, combining the two band names and cementing Tracii’s surname into rock history.

The collaboration was short-lived, however. Personality clashes led to Guns exiting the group after only a handful of performances, with Slash later stepping in as his replacement. Although his time in the band was brief, Guns’ role in the creation of Guns N’ Roses remains a notable footnote in rock history.

    L.A. Guns Breakthrough

After leaving Guns N’ Roses, Tracii Guns reformed L.A. Guns and achieved mainstream success. The band signed with Vertigo Records and released their self-titled debut album in 1988. Their commercial breakthrough came with “Cocked & Loaded” (1989), which featured the hit single “The Ballad of Jayne.”

Throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s, L.A. Guns became a major presence in glam metal, releasing albums such as “Hollywood Vampires” (1991) and touring extensively. Tracii’s guitar work—raw, melodic, and bluesy—was central to the band’s sound and identity.

    Career Challenges

Like many glam metal artists, Guns faced challenges in the 1990s as grunge and alternative rock reshaped the music industry. L.A. Guns went through numerous lineup changes, with Tracii leaving and rejoining the band multiple times.

At one point, two different versions of L.A. Guns were touring simultaneously—one led by Guns and another by vocalist Phil Lewis—highlighting both internal tensions and the enduring demand for the band’s music.

During these years, Tracii remained active through side projects such as Brides of Destruction (with Nikki Sixx of Mötley Crüe), League of Gentlemen, and Sunbomb, proving his versatility beyond traditional glam metal.

    Reunion

In 2016, Tracii Guns reunited with Phil Lewis, reforming the classic L.A. Guns lineup. The reunion marked a career revival and led to well-received albums including “The Missing Peace” (2017) and “The Devil You Know” (2019). The band continues to tour and record, reconnecting with longtime fans and introducing their music to new audiences.
