The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has announced more than 21,000 job vacancies and 24,000 internship positions for teachers.

In a public notice on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, acting TSC CEO Eveleen Mitei said the 21,313 vacancies include positions for chief principal, senior principal, principal, deputy principal, senior lecturer, senior master, secondary teacher I, senior headteacher, headteacher, deputy headteacher, senior teacher, senior curriculum support officer, and curriculum support officer.

Qualified candidates are required to submit their applications online through the TSC portal at www.teachersonline.go.ke no later than midnight on Monday, August 25, 2025.

Manual applications will not be accepted.

“Successful candidates shall be posted to schools where vacancies are available,” the notice stated.

In addition, TSC has advertised 24,000 internship opportunities for teachers in junior schools to support the implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

Applications for the internship positions will open on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, and close at midnight on Monday, September 9, 2025. Interested candidates should apply online through www.tsc.go.ke under the “Careers” section or via teachersonline.tsc.go.ke.

The Teacher Internship Programme is a one year programme meant to equip and sustain the competencies of persons entering the teaching service. The programme targets unemployed registered teachers to
be assigned to learning institutions where their teaching experience will be enhanced through mentorship, coaching, and exposure to practical teaching experience.

Interns attached to Junior schools will be eligible for a monthly stipend of Sh20,000. The stipend will be paid subject to statutory deductions, where applicable.

Meanwhile, the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has criticised the commission for failing to promote teachers who have remained in the same job group for more than a decade.

KUPPET Secretary-General Akello Misori said TSC should follow the example of the National Police Service (NPS), which recently announced automatic promotions for police officers stuck in one job group for over 10 years.

“We commend the National Police Service for announcing promotions without the declaration of vacancies or interviews. TSC should do the same for long-serving teachers who are already qualified for higher positions,” Misori said.

The union’s Deputy Secretary-General Moses Nthurima added that the stagnation in teacher promotions was discriminatory and showed the commission’s reluctance to address educators’ concerns.

“When a government singles out one sector for automatic promotions, what about teachers? It is good that police officers have been promoted, but teachers who have been in the same job group for more than a decade deserve the same recognition,” he said.
