Global music star Lizzo has revealed intimate details about her personal journey, including admitting that she lost her virginity in her 30s after previously concealing the truth for years.
The “About Damn Time” hitmaker, whose real name is Melissa Jefferson, made the revelation during a conversation on the Friends Keep Secrets podcast hosted by Benny Blanco, Lil Dicky, and Kristin Batalucco.
“I was a late bloomer. I lied about it for a long time,” the 37-year-old singer said, before confirming that the milestone happened in 2020.
Lizzo explained that the experience was tied to a personal promise she made in her youth—one she linked to her ambition of winning a Grammy Award.
“I promised myself when I was younger that I wouldn’t have sex until I won a Grammy,” she said, adding with surprise, “Isn’t that crazy? I wasn’t even thinking about it.”
The singer clarified that the moment did not happen on the night of the awards ceremony itself, but shortly after she secured her first Grammy wins in 2020.

That year marked a major breakthrough in her career, as she took home three Grammy Awards: Best Pop Solo Performance for Truth Hurts, Best Urban Contemporary Album for the deluxe edition of Cuz I Love You, and Best Traditional R&B Performance for Jerome. She was also nominated in several top categories, including Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best New Artist.
During the podcast, Lizzo also reflected on how she previously navigated awkward social situations by pretending to have sexual experience she did not have, including a candid college memory at the University of Houston.
“I feel a weight off my chest right now,” she said, describing an embarrassing moment when friends questioned her about her sexual experience. “I was like, ‘No!’ … I said, ‘I love the D,’ and it held me over for a little while.”
The singer further opened up about her first kiss, describing it as disappointing and emotionally overwhelming. Raised in a strict church environment, she recalled that she and her peers had once made a pact to abstain from intimacy before marriage.
When the moment finally happened at age 21, she said it left her upset rather than excited.
“I was actually very upset about it. It was a New Year’s Eve thing and he forced it on me. I was really mad,” she said.
Beyond her personal revelations, Lizzo also spoke in previous interviews about her relationship with her partner Myke Wright, telling Howard Stern in 2022 that she was deeply committed to him.
