    Early Life

Yelawolf was born Michael Wayne Atha on December 30, 1979, in Gadsden, Alabama. He spent part of his childhood in Antioch, Tennessee, after moving there with his family.

He attended Carter Lawrence Middle School in Nashville, where he became increasingly interested in hip hop. His exposure to music came at an unusually early age. His mother’s boyfriend worked as a sound designer for Aerosmith during the band’s well-known collaboration with Run-DMC.

That connection gave Yelawolf an opportunity to meet members of Run-DMC. The group visited his home and introduced him to music from artists such as the Beastie Boys. Those early experiences helped shape his musical interests and eventually influenced the distinctive mixture of hip hop, rock, country and Southern sounds that became part of his career.

    Early Music Career

Yelawolf first gained national exposure in 2005 when he appeared on the reality television competition “The Road to Stardom with Missy Elliott.” Although he was eliminated from the competition, the appearance helped introduce him to a wider audience.

After the show, he released his debut album, “Creekwater.” He followed it with the mixtape “Pissin’ in a Barrel of Beez.”

In 2007, Yelawolf signed with Columbia Records and released the single “Kickin’.” His time with the label was short-lived, however, and he was eventually dropped.

Rather than abandoning his music career, Yelawolf continued releasing independent material. His subsequent projects included “Ball of Flames: The Ballad of Slick Rick E. Bobby,” “Stereo: A Hip Hop Tribute to Classic Rock,” and “Arena Rap.”

These releases allowed him to develop his style and build a following outside the traditional major-label system.

    Breakthrough

Yelawolf’s career changed significantly in 2010 with the release of “Trunk Muzik.” The mixtape attracted considerable attention and helped establish him as a distinctive voice in Southern hip hop.

Later that year, he signed with Interscope Records. The label re-released the project as the EP “Trunk Muzik 0-60.”

His growing profile eventually attracted the attention of Eminem. In 2011, Yelawolf signed with Shady Records, Eminem’s record label.

That same year, he released his first major-label studio album, “Radioactive.” The album debuted at No. 13 on the Billboard 200 and included songs such as “Hard White (Up in the Club)” and “Let’s Roll.”

The Shady Records deal gave Yelawolf access to a larger audience while placing him alongside artists associated with Eminem’s label.

Love Story Becomes a Major Commercial Success

Following “Radioactive,” Yelawolf continued building his catalog through mixtapes and collaborative projects.

In 2012, he released “Heart of Dixie” as a free digital download. The following year, he released “Trunk Muzik Returns,” another free project that featured appearances from artists including Raekwon, A$AP Rocky and Killer Mike.

Yelawolf’s next major studio project was “Love Story.” He began promoting the album in 2014 with the single “Box Chevy V.”

Released in April 2015, “Love Story” became his highest-charting album at the time. It debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200.

The album also produced some of his most recognizable songs, including “Till It’s Gone” and “Best Friend,” the latter featuring Eminem. Both songs developed large online audiences, with their music videos eventually generating more than 100 million YouTube views.

The commercial performance of “Love Story” strengthened Yelawolf’s position as one of the prominent artists associated with the Shady Records roster.

Trial by Fire and Trunk Muzik III

Yelawolf followed “Love Story” with the 2016 EP “Hotel.”

In 2017, he released his fourth studio album, “Trial by Fire.” The project included the singles “Daylight,” “Shadows,” “Row Your Boat,” and “Punk.”

Two years later, he released “Trunk Muzik III,” returning to the series that had played an important role in his rise to fame.

“Trunk Muzik III” was his final album released through Eminem’s Shady Records before Yelawolf moved further into independent music. The album included appearances from artists such as Machine Gun Kelly, MopTop, Big Henri and DJ Klever.

    Independent Music and Slumerican

After his time with Shady Records, Yelawolf continued releasing music through his independent label, Slumerican.

In 2019, he released “Ghetto Cowboy.” The album was supported by singles including “Unnatural Born Killer” and “Opie Taylor.”

He followed the project with “Mud Mouth,” which arrived in 2021.

Moving toward independent releases gave Yelawolf greater control over his music and allowed him to continue developing projects outside the traditional major-label system.

His independent work has become an important part of his career and remains relevant to understanding Yelawolf’s net worth, particularly because artists can generate income through multiple channels beyond traditional record sales.

    Collaborative Projects

Collaboration has been another important part of Yelawolf’s career.

In 2012, he worked with English singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran on the collaborative EP “The Slumdon Bridge.” That same year, he teamed up with Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker for “Psycho White.”

He later collaborated with DJ Paul on projects including “Black Fall” and “Slumafia.” He also worked with Cook Up Boss on “Catfish Billy x Cub Cook Up Boss” and “Catfish Billy x Cub Cook Up Boss Slum Trap.”

In 2020, Yelawolf collaborated with nu metal band Korn on “Devil Went Down to Georgia.”

His collaborative output continued in 2021 with “Yelawolf Blacksheep” with Caskey, “Turquoise Tornado” with Riff Raff, and “Mile Zero” with DJ Muggs.

In 2022, he worked with Shooter Jennings on “Sometimes Y.”

These projects have allowed Yelawolf to work across different genres while expanding his musical catalog.

    Musical Influences

Yelawolf’s sound has been shaped by a wide range of musical influences.

Among the hip hop artists and groups he has cited as important influences are Outkast, the Dungeon Family, Black Star, Pete Rock and CL Smooth.

His musical interests also extend beyond hip hop. He has identified artists and bands such as Black Sabbath, Johnny Cash, The Doors, Fleetwood Mac, Portishead and N.W.A. as influences.

That broad musical background can be heard in his approach to songwriting and production. His music has frequently combined Southern hip hop with elements associated with rock, country and alternative music.

    Acting Career

Music has remained Yelawolf’s primary career, but he has also appeared in television and film.

In 2011, he appeared in an episode of the television dramedy “Single Ladies.”

He later expanded his acting work with a role in the 2019 film “The Peanut Butter Falcon,” where he played the character Ratboy.

Although acting has represented only a portion of his entertainment career, these appearances have given him another outlet outside music.

    Personal Life

Yelawolf became engaged to singer-songwriter Fefe Dobson in 2013. The couple later married in 2019.

He also has three children from a previous relationship.

His family life has largely remained separate from his public career, while his music has continued to focus on his Southern roots, personal experiences and broad range of musical influences.
