Construction of the Green Park underpass at the busy junction of Uhuru Highway and Haile Selassie Avenue is almost complete, with 88 percent of the work already done.
The modern tunnel is expected to make it easier and safer for pedestrians to move in and out of Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) while also easing traffic flow.
The underpass, part of a Sh2 billion project led by the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) and built by China Road and Bridge Corporation, is designed to provide a smooth and secure route beneath the busy highway.
It will link key locations including Uhuru Park, the Nairobi Railway Station, and Haile Selassie Avenue directly to the CBD—without forcing pedestrians to cross dangerous traffic lanes.
Speaking during an inspection tour, Deputy Chief of Staff for Performance and Delivery Management Eliud Owalo said the project is more than just an infrastructure upgrade.
“This Green Park underpass is not just any construction project, it is the embodiment of a vision to modernize Nairobi’s urban landscape. We’re creating an experience, not just a crossing,” he said.
The new underpass draws inspiration from leading global cities like London and Amsterdam, where pedestrian tunnels serve both transport and commercial functions. Nairobi’s version will feature well-lit corridors, CCTV surveillance, and retail outlets.
It aims to offer pedestrians not only safety but also comfort and convenience, with amenities such as coffee shops, kiosks, and newsstands within the walkway.
Once complete, the underpass is expected to reduce traffic jams and pedestrian accidents at one of Nairobi’s most congested junctions. By moving foot traffic below ground, the project marks a shift from reactive traffic management to proactive, design-based planning in line with international best practices.
