Three miners were killed at the weekend in separate incidents reported in Siaya and Homa Bay Counties.

Police said the incidents happened after gold mining sites collapsed. Four other miners escaped unhurt from the scenes on November 8, 2025.

Such incidents have been on the rise in separate gold mine sites in the country amid a campaign for safe mining activities.

According to the police, the first incident was reported in Akala, Gem-Waga’s Rera area where two men were trapped and killed after the site collapsed.

A group of miners were in a tunnel busy when the site collapsed killing the two. Two others were rescued and rushed to the hospital.

Those who died were identified as Jack Omondi and Dickson Oduor.

Their bodies were moved to a local mortuary pending an autopsy and investigations.

In Oyugis, Homa Bay County’s Ruga area, a miner was killed after a site collapsed.

The body of one Dennis Ochieng, 45 was retrieved from the mining site long after he had been trapped therein, this was after the site suddenly collapsed as he and others were busy at work.

The body was moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy and investigations.

Police said they are investigating the incidents.

Following the incidents, the Mining Police Unit launched an operation targeting the sites.

Seven Chinese nationals were arrested in Suna, Migori County for illegally operating a gold mining site in the area.

Police said they were operating and mining without a licence which is against the law.

They were later escorted to Nairobi for further processing.

The police unit was launched to ensure compliance in the mining sector in general. The unit has been visiting various mines in Kakamega, Migori, Homa Bay, Siaya, West Pokot, Marsabit and Isiolo as part of efforts to ensure compliance, officials said.
