A woman was attacked and robbed of Sh450,000 after leaving a bank in Homa Bay Town.

The money was meant to pay for services to be offered at a funeral event of the woman’s mother, police said.

She had been to Equity Bank in the area and withdrew the cash before jumping onto a waiting car headed for her home in the Kogwe area on Friday evening.

While waiting for her gate to be opened, four men who are believed to have trailed her from the bank struck. They blocked her way and bundled her out of the car to theirs, she told police.

They then ransacked her car and drove away with her for few kilometers towards Rongo. On reaching the Riosiri area, they dumped her on the roadside and escaped with the cash, a laptop and several work documents. The victim is a senior official at the Homa Bay County Assembly.

She called for help and was later taken to the Rodi Police Station where she made the report.

Police said they are investigating the incident. It is believed the gang had prior information on the plans by the victim to withdrew the cash or they were tipped off from the bank or were monitoring the transactions at the banking hall, police said.

A team visited the bank and talked to staff there and reviewed security footage to establish if the suspects were in there before the robbery happened.

Such incidents have been reported in separate urban areas and have been linked to a cartel working with some rogue staff of banking institutions. Police are pursuing the incidents.

And police fought off a mob that tried to steal bags of wheat that spilled after a train capsized in Timboroa area. The train was headed for Nakuru from Eldoret on Friday night when some of the wagons capsized.

Officials said 11 wagons went off the railway track in the incident.

Armed police had to be called to fight off looters who emerged and started to loot the product.

The cause of the accident is under investigation, police said.

Meanwhile, police are investigating an incident where suspected thieves broke into the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution in Butere, Kakamega County and stole property.

The unknown number of thieves broke the main door to access the office and stole two desktop monitors.

Police said they are investigating the incident.
