Manchester United have officially sacked head coach Ruben Amorim, bringing an end to the Portuguese manager’s 14-month spell at Old Trafford.

Amorim’s final match in charge was a 1–1 draw away to Leeds United on Sunday, a result that proved insufficient to ease mounting pressure on his position.

Sources close to the club indicate that Amorim’s dismissal followed growing internal tensions between the head coach and members of Manchester United’s senior leadership, including director of football Jason Wilcox.

It is understood that Amorim was informed of the decision during a meeting on Monday morning with Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada, where he was told he would be relieved of his duties with immediate effect.

Amorim was appointed in November 2024, taking over from Erik ten Hag in one of the most high-profile managerial roles in world football. However, his time at the club proved turbulent and short-lived.

During his tenure, Amorim oversaw 63 matches in all competitions, recording 24 wins, which equates to a 38 per cent win rate. Despite periods of promise, Manchester United struggled for consistency and failed to meet expectations domestically.

    Club Statement

In a brief statement published on the club’s official website, Manchester United confirmed the decision and explained the reasoning behind the change.

“With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change. This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish.

The club would like to thank Ruben for his contribution to the club and wishes him well for the future.”

United currently sit sixth in the Premier League, and attention now turns to who will lead the team for the remainder of the season as the club seeks stability and improved results.

Amorim, meanwhile, leaves Old Trafford with his reputation intact in European football, having previously earned praise for his work in Portugal, though his spell in England ultimately fell short of expectations.
