Arsenal Legend Per Mertesacker to Step Down as Academy Manager at Season’s End

Arsenal have confirmed that club legend Per Mertesacker will step down from his role as academy manager at the end of the current season, bringing an end to an influential eight-year chapter in the club’s youth development.

The former Arsenal captain, affectionately known by fans as the “BFG,” has overseen the Hale End academy since retiring from professional football in 2018. During that time, he has played a central role in reshaping the club’s youth structure and reconnecting Arsenal with its long-standing tradition of promoting homegrown talent. Mertesacker will remain in his position until the campaign concludes, helping to ensure a smooth transition before moving on to new professional challenges.

The announcement has been met with surprise across the football world, given how closely Mertesacker has become associated with Arsenal’s academy. After hanging up his boots following a distinguished playing career that included winning the 2014 World Cup with Germany, he moved straight into the academy leadership role and quickly left his mark.

Under his guidance, Arsenal’s youth system produced a new generation of players who have gone on to form the backbone of the club’s first team resurgence. Mertesacker championed a clear development philosophy centred on producing “Strong Young Gunners,” focusing not only on footballing excellence but also on personal growth and character.

In a statement released by the club, the 41-year-old explained that his decision was driven by a desire to challenge himself professionally.

“Arsenal is and will always be a very special club to me, so this was a difficult decision,” Mertesacker said. “I am very thankful for the trust the club put in me when transitioning from a first-team player directly into the role as Head of Academy. Now it is time for me to move on and explore something new and push myself even further.”

True to his reputation for professionalism, Mertesacker stressed that his focus remains firmly on the task at hand until his final day.

“I remain focused on finishing the season strongly, continuing to nurture and develop our young talent and support a seamless transition until my very last day with the club,” he added.

Mertesacker’s impact is evident throughout the current Arsenal squad. Bukayo Saka stands as the most high-profile product of the academy during his tenure, while emerging talents such as Ethan Nwaneri and Myles Lewis-Skelly have also been successfully integrated into the senior setup. Several other academy graduates continue to feature across the club, highlighting the strength and sustainability of the pathway he helped build.

By embedding the “Arsenal DNA” at youth level, Mertesacker not only reinforced the club’s identity but also helped reduce reliance on the transfer market, allowing Arsenal to strategically invest in established stars to complement their homegrown core.
