CUE Lists Illegal Student Recruitment Agencies in Kenya

The Commission for University Education (CUE) has listed 20 illegal student recruitment agencies operating in Kenya.

In a notice issued on Tuesday, January 20, 2025, the commission warned students and parents against dealing with the agencies, saying they are not recognised and may expose learners to fraud.

At the same time, CUE released a fresh list of approved universities in Kenya, valid as of November 13, 2025.

According to the commission, Kenya has 35 approved public universities, 32 approved private universities, three specialised public degree-awarding universities, eight public university constituent colleges, two private university constituent colleges and three institutions with Letters of Interim Authority.

CUE warned that any institution operating as a university or awarding degrees that does not appear on its approved list is illegal, and its qualifications will not be recognised in Kenya.

The regulator said the move is meant to protect students from fake universities, unaccredited programmes and dishonest recruitment agents.

CUE said details on accredited universities, approved academic programmes and recognition of degree qualifications are available on its website at https://cue.or.ke/index.php/status-of-universities, https://cue.or.ke/index.php/accredited-universities and https://cue.or.ke/index.php/recognition-and-equation-of-qualifications1.

The commission urged learners and parents to confirm the status of institutions and agencies before enrolling to avoid losing time and money on unrecognised degrees.
