Carlos Javier Correa Oppenheimer Jr., commonly known as Carlos Correa, is a professional baseball shortstop and third baseman from Puerto Rico.
Born on September 22, 1994, in Ponce, Puerto Rico, he plays for the Houston Astros in Major League Baseball (MLB).
The Astros selected him as the first overall pick in the 2012 MLB Draft straight out of the Puerto Rico Baseball Academy and High School in Gurabo.
Correa has established himself as one of the game’s premier infielders, known for his powerful bat, elite defense, and leadership on the field.
He has also spent time with the Minnesota Twins before returning to Houston.
Siblings
Carlos comes from a close-knit family and has two siblings, a younger brother named Jean Carlos Correa and a younger sister named Leibysand Correa.
His brother Jean Carlos followed in his footsteps as a baseball player.
Drafted by the Houston Astros in the 33rd round of the 2018 MLB Draft, J.C. played as a shortstop and second baseman in the minor leagues, earning recognition as a legitimate prospect before being released by the organization in 2024.
Leibysand, the youngest sibling, has occasionally appeared in the spotlight for her love of baseball and pop culture.
In 2022, for her 14th birthday, Carlos arranged for her to meet her favorite player, Shohei Ohtani, at Angel Stadium, creating a memorable family moment during a road trip.
Career
Carlos Correa grew up in humble circumstances in Barrio Velázquez, a fishing village in Santa Isabel, Puerto Rico.

His parents, Carlos Correa Sr. and Sandybel Oppenheimer, worked tirelessly, his father in construction from a young age, to provide for the family and support young Carlos’s baseball dreams.
Correa began helping his father on job sites as a child and showed early talent on the diamond.
After being drafted first overall, he rose quickly through the Astros’ minor league system and made his MLB debut on June 8, 2015, at age 20.
In his rookie season with the Astros, Correa immediately impressed, earning American League Rookie of the Year honors.
He has since become a cornerstone of the Astros franchise, contributing to their resurgence as a powerhouse.
After a standout run with Houston from 2015 to 2021, including a World Series title, he signed with the Minnesota Twins as a free agent in 2022.
Injuries and team decisions led to his return to the Astros via trade in later years.
Throughout his career, Correa has been praised for his clutch hitting, smooth fielding at shortstop (and occasional time at third base), and ability to perform in high-pressure postseason situations.
Accolades
Correa won the American League Rookie of the Year Award in 2015 and was named to the MLB All-Star team multiple times, including in 2017, 2021, and 2024.
In 2017, he helped lead the Astros to a World Series championship and earned AL Player of the Month honors for May.
His defensive prowess earned him the Gold Glove Award in 2021, along with the Platinum Glove recognition that same year for being the top defensive player in the American League.
Correa has also received Player of the Week awards and other postseason accolades, cementing his status as a two-way star.
