Donald E. Newhouse, the longtime head of the newspaper division of Advance Publications — the parent company of Condé Nast — has died at the age of 96.

Newhouse died from lymphoma at his home in Lambertville, New Jersey, on Tuesday, May 26, according to his son Steven Newhouse, who confirmed the news to The New York Times.

Advance Publications is one of the most influential privately held media empires in the United States, with interests spanning newspapers, magazines and digital platforms.

Donald Newhouse was part of the second generation of the family behind the company, which was founded by his father, Samuel I. Newhouse Sr., who began building the media business in 1922 with the acquisition of the Staten Island Advance, according to The New York Times.

After Samuel Sr.’s death in 1979, the business was divided between his sons, Donald and Samuel I. Newhouse Jr., known as “Si.” While Si oversaw Condé Nast’s global magazine portfolio — including titles such as Vogue, The New Yorker and Vanity Fair — Donald focused primarily on newspapers and regional news operations.

    Si Newhouse died in 2017.

Donald Newhouse chose a more newsroom-centered path, spending years working with The Star-Ledger in Newark, one of New Jersey’s most prominent newspapers.

During his tenure, the paper produced multiple Pulitzer Prize-winning investigations, earning recognition for its reporting standards and editorial influence.

His son Steven Newhouse described him as deeply committed to journalism and the daily newsroom routine.

“My Dad loved the Star-Ledger. Each workday he left home for Newark in the early morning darkness filled with excitement,” Steven told NJ.com. “He was especially proud of the great stories produced by Star-Ledger reporters.”

Beyond New Jersey, Donald Newhouse expanded Advance Publications’ newspaper footprint across the United States, including ownership stakes in major regional outlets such as The Plain Dealer in Cleveland, The Oregonian in Portland, The Times-Picayune in New Orleans, The Saginaw News in Michigan, The Times of Trenton, and the now-closed Birmingham News in Alabama.

His leadership helped shape one of the most extensive local news networks in the country.

Tributes following his death highlighted both his business influence and personal presence within the media industry.

Anna Wintour, Global Editorial Director of Vogue and Chief Content Officer of Condé Nast, described him as a vibrant and energetic figure.

“If Si was by nature retiring and reflective, Donald was an outward-blazing light,” she said in a statement. “You reveled in his company. He filled you with energy and humor when you felt doubtful and weak,” according to NJ.com.

The Newhouse family has long been associated with Syracuse University in New York, where the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications was established through family philanthropy.

Donald Newhouse attended Syracuse University but did not graduate, later receiving an honorary Doctor of Letters in 2016, when he also delivered the commencement address at the age of 87.

Reflecting on his early departure from college, he once said he was eager to enter the family business.

“I was impatient to begin work in my father’s world,” he said. “Too impatient to make my way to commencement, I left Syracuse after my sophomore year.”

He added that he learned the “business side of newspapering,” including traditional production processes such as printing presses, typesetting and physical newsroom production methods that have since largely disappeared from modern journalism.
