Throughout his NBA career, Steve Nash earned approximately $146 million in salary alone, with his earnings increasing steadily as he established himself among the league’s elite point guards.

His highest-paying seasons came during the latter stages of his career, when he earned nearly $10 million annually while playing for the Phoenix Suns and later the Los Angeles Lakers.

Some of his notable salaries included:

    Season Team Salary
    1996–97 Phoenix Suns $916,000
    1999–2000 Dallas Mavericks $5.5 million
    2004–05 Phoenix Suns $8.75 million
    2008–09 Phoenix Suns $12.25 million
    2009–10 Phoenix Suns $13.13 million
2012–13 Los Angeles Lakers $8.7 million
2014–15 Los Angeles Lakers $9.7 million

By the time he retired in 2015, Nash had become one of the highest-paid point guards of his generation.

    Early Life

Stephen John Nash was born on February 7, 1974, in Johannesburg, South Africa.

When he was still a toddler, his family relocated to Regina, Saskatchewan, before eventually settling in Victoria, British Columbia. Growing up in Canada, Nash excelled in multiple sports, particularly soccer and ice hockey. His father had played professional soccer, and Steve originally envisioned a future in that sport.

Basketball did not become his primary focus until his early teenage years. Despite receiving little national attention from college recruiters, he developed into one of Canada’s top high school players and eventually accepted a scholarship to Santa Clara University.

At Santa Clara, Nash transformed into one of college basketball’s premier guards, leading the Broncos to multiple conference championships and attracting NBA scouts before entering the 1996 NBA Draft.

    NBA Career

    Phoenix Suns

The Phoenix Suns selected Nash with the 15th overall pick in the 1996 NBA Draft.

Although he showed promise during his rookie seasons, playing time was limited, leading Phoenix to trade him to the Dallas Mavericks after two years.

    Dallas Mavericks

The move to Dallas proved to be a turning point.

Alongside star forward Dirk Nowitzki, Nash helped transform the Mavericks into one of the NBA’s top teams. His elite passing, shooting efficiency, and court vision established him as one of the league’s best point guards while earning multiple All-Star selections.

    Return to Phoenix

In 2004, Nash returned to the Phoenix Suns as a free agent, beginning the most successful stretch of his career.

Under head coach Mike D’Antoni’s fast-paced offensive system, Nash won back-to-back NBA MVP Awards in 2005 and 2006. During this period, the Suns consistently ranked among the league’s highest-scoring teams and became championship contenders.

He continued producing elite performances despite recurring back, knee, and hamstring injuries.

    Los Angeles Lakers

Nash joined the Los Angeles Lakers in 2012 in hopes of competing for another championship.

Unfortunately, injuries severely limited his effectiveness. Persistent leg, hip, and back problems restricted his playing time, and he officially retired from professional basketball in 2015 after 18 NBA seasons.

    Coaching Career

After retiring as a player, Nash transitioned into coaching and basketball management.

He initially worked as a player development consultant before being hired as head coach of the Brooklyn Nets in 2020.

Although the Nets featured superstar talent, injuries, roster instability, and off-court controversies made sustained success difficult. Nash coached the team until 2022 before departing the organization.

He has also served as a senior adviser to Canada’s men’s national basketball program, helping develop future generations of Canadian players.

    Endorsements

Steve Nash expanded his earnings well beyond basketball through endorsements and entrepreneurship.

His longtime relationship with Nike remained one of his most recognizable commercial partnerships.

He also ventured into several businesses, including:

    • Steve Nash Sports Clubs, a chain of fitness centers in British Columbia
    • Film production through his own production company
    • Commercial directing and creative media projects
    • Documentary production, including Into the Wind, which chronicled the life of Terry Fox

Nash has generally aligned himself with brands and projects emphasizing health, sports, and community development.

    Soccer Investments

Although basketball made him famous, Nash has always maintained a deep passion for soccer.

He became a minority owner of the MLS club Vancouver Whitecaps and later acquired a significant ownership stake in Spanish football club RCD Mallorca.

Nash has frequently stated that, had circumstances been different, he might have pursued soccer professionally instead of basketball.

    Personal Life

Steve Nash married Alejandra Amarilla in 2005, and the couple had three children before divorcing in 2010.

In 2016, he married former professional volleyball player Lilla Frederick. Together they welcomed another child in 2017.

Outside of sports, Nash is widely respected for his charitable work. Through the Steve Nash Foundation, established in 2001, he has supported numerous initiatives focused on children’s health, education, and underserved communities.

    Real Estate

Over the years, Nash has owned several high-end properties.

In 2014, he purchased a Manhattan Beach, California, property for approximately $4.8 million, reportedly planning to redevelop it into a custom-built home.

He also owned a luxury residence in Paradise Valley, Arizona, near Phoenix. After listing the property for several years, he eventually sold it in 2017 for $3.175 million.

    Awards

Steve Nash’s career includes numerous accolades that cement his legacy as one of basketball’s greatest point guards.

    His achievements include:

    • Two-time NBA Most Valuable Player (2005, 2006)
    • Eight-time NBA All-Star
    • Seven-time All-NBA selection
    • Five-time NBA assists leader
    • Member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame
