In a rare show of unity in the face of perceived oppression, three Uganda Cranes players have openly added their voices to the call for opposition figure Bobi Wine to be set free.

Bobi, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, was arrested in Arua, Western Uganda Tuesday after clashes broke out on Monday during campaigning for a by-election.

Kyagulanyi’s driver was shot dead in the violence.

The 36-year-old Member of Parliament was reportedly brutality beaten while in detention before being charged before a military court on Thursday with unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.

His plight attracted so much attention both within and outside Uganda with calls for his unconditional release. #FreeBobiWine hashtag was a top trending topic is Kenya during the week.

Uganda Cranes trio of defender Shafik Batambuze, midfielders Godfrey Baba Kizito and Khalid Aucho were not left behind.

Aucho posted on his Facebook account a picture of him, Shafik and Bobi Wine written: “We stand with you our brother.”

The India-based former Gor Mahia midfielder added a caption: “It’s our country free Bobi Wine the freedom fighter.”

Kizito on the other hand pasted a photo of Bobi captioned: “Rasta man never trouble no one, we give respect to everyone, free the youth.”

Bobi is a known fierce critic of President Yoweri Museveni, who has been in power since 1986. He campaigns under the slogan “people power” and describes himself as Ghetto president.
