Several personal cars were this morning turned into Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) as the crackdown on the famous Michuki rules intensified, forcing majority of matatu operators to withdraw services.

The few PSVs in operation have hiked fares, with most doubling the fares. Those plying on Thika Roads were charging between Ksh200 to Ksh250, more than triple on the normal fare charges.

The situation was no different for vehicles plying along Jogoo Road and Mombasa Road.

Several police officers stood guard at various checkpoints to ensure that the regulations are followed to the letter.

The National Police Service also provided public complaints channels, to ensure total implementation of the rules which Interior Security CS Fred Matiang’i said will touch even the police service.

“As we restore sanity on our roads, members of public/Police Officers can now send compliments/complaints against Police officers anonymously for free by calling 0800721230,sending SMS to 40683 or by dialing *683#,” tweeted the Police Service.

At least 4,000 traffic officers will be reinforced by another 10,000 police officers to ensure success of the crackdown.

Interior CS Fred Matiang’i has vowed to come down hard on violators. He has warned that there would be no backing down on the resolve to restore sanity in the transport sector.
