Alex Matere declares bid for Westlands parliamentary seat in 2027

As the 2027 General Election approaches, political realignments are beginning to take shape across Nairobi, with Westlands Constituency emerging as one of the key battlegrounds.

National youth leader Alex Matere has declared his intention to contest for the Westlands parliamentary seat, currently held by Tim Wanyonyi.

Wanyonyi, who has represented the constituency since 2013, is expected to exit the race as he shifts focus to the Bungoma gubernatorial contest in 2027, leaving the seat open for a competitive showdown.

Matere’s entry sets the stage for a high-profile contest that has already attracted prominent names, including former Law Society of Kenya President Nelson Havi and Kitusuru MCA Alvin Palapala.

Matere is widely known as a close ally and longtime supporter of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, having grown politically under his mentorship from his days in student leadership. He served as Secretary General of the Students Organisation of Nairobi University (SONU), where he first emerged as a vocal youth mobilizer.

Over the years, he has remained active in national political discourse, frequently appearing in local media to comment on youth engagement and governance issues.

Currently serving as the Executive Director of Youth Bridge Kenya, a civil society organization focused on youth empowerment, Matere has positioned himself as a champion of youth inclusion and policy reform.

His past public service roles include serving as a Director on the Board of the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation, where he chaired both the Audit and Technical Committees.

Politically, he convened the Youth for Building Bridges Consortium, which supported constitutional reform efforts during the Handshake period between Raila Odinga and former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

He has also served on several national taskforces focused on youth inclusion and empowerment, contributing to frameworks such as the Kenya Youth Policy, Kenya Skills Development Policy, Kenya Career Guidance Policy, and the Public Service Internship Policy.

Matere describes himself as an astute scholar with strong grassroots mobilization skills. He is an alumnus of the African Leadership Forum under the mentorship of former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, whom he cites as one of his most influential mentors. He also participated in the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP), an exchange initiative run by the U.S. State Department for emerging global leaders.

Speaking during his inaugural consultative meeting with clergy from across Westlands earlier this week, Matere framed his candidacy as a generational call to action.

“I know the challenges that face our community and our nation — from high unemployment and limited access to opportunities, to a political culture that sometimes marginalizes young voices. Politics should be about opportunity and service to transform lives, not hatred or division,” he said.

“I am not here because I am young. I am here because I believe my generation has the energy, the ideas, and the resolve to make a difference. Together, we will steer Westlands to greater heights, ensuring that no one is left behind.”

With Wanyonyi’s anticipated departure and multiple heavyweight contenders lining up, the Westlands race is shaping up to be one of Nairobi’s most closely watched contests in 2027.
