    Siblings

Antonio has one younger brother, Francisco Javier Domínguez Bandera, known as “Chico.”

Born in 1961, Chico has largely stayed out of the public eye, unlike his famous sibling.

While little is known about Chico’s personal or professional life, Antonio has occasionally mentioned their close relationship, rooted in their shared upbringing in Málaga.

    Career

Banderas’ career spans over four decades, marked by collaborations with acclaimed directors and a seamless transition between Spanish and Hollywood cinema.

Initially aspiring to be a professional soccer player, a foot injury at age 14 shifted his focus to acting.

He began performing in local theater in Málaga before moving to Madrid in the early 1980s, where he joined the National Theatre of Spain.

His breakthrough came through a series of collaborations with Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar.

Films like Labyrinth of Passion (1982), Matador (1986), Law of Desire (1987), Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (1988), and Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! (1990) showcased his intensity and charm, establishing him as a leading man in Spanish cinema.

Banderas transitioned to Hollywood in the early 1990s, despite initially speaking little English.

His first major English-language role was in The Mambo Kings (1992), where he played a Cuban musician.

He gained wider recognition with Philadelphia (1993) opposite Tom Hanks, portraying a compassionate partner in one of the first mainstream films to address AIDS.

His role as the swashbuckling Zorro in The Mask of Zorro (1998) cemented his status as a Hollywood heartthrob, blending action, romance, and humor.

Banderas’ versatility shone in diverse roles, from the villainous Armand in Interview with the Vampire (1994) to the comedic Che in Evita (1996) alongside Madonna.

He collaborated with Robert Rodriguez on the Mariachi trilogy, playing the iconic El Mariachi in Desperado (1995) and Once Upon a Time in Mexico (2003).

His voice work as Puss in Boots in the Shrek series (2004–2011) and the spin-off Puss in Boots (2011) and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (2022) introduced him to younger audiences, with the latter earning critical acclaim.

Banderas returned to Almodóvar’s fold with The Skin I Live In (2011) and Pain and Glory (2019), the latter earning him some of the best reviews of his career for his semi-autobiographical portrayal of a tormented filmmaker.

Other notable films include Spy Kids (2001–2003), Frida (2002), and The Expendables 3 (2014).

Beyond acting, Banderas has directed films like Crazy in Alabama (1999) and Summer Rain (2006) and produced several projects through his company, Green Moon Productions.

In theater, he starred in the Broadway revival of Nine (2003), earning praise for his portrayal of Guido Contini.

Banderas also founded the Teatro del Soho CaixaBank in Málaga in 2019, directing and starring in productions like A Chorus Line to promote cultural arts in his hometown.

    Accolades

Banderas has received numerous awards and nominations, reflecting his impact on global cinema.

For Pain and Glory (2019), he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor, a first for a Spanish actor, and won the Goya Award for Best Actor and the Cannes Film Festival’s Best Actor Award.

He has earned five Golden Globe nominations for Evita (1996), The Mask of Zorro (1998), And Starring Pancho Villa as Himself (2003), Genius: Picasso (2018), and Pain and Glory (2019).

Banderas has won three Goya Awards, including an Honorary Goya in 2015 for his career contributions.

He received a Primetime Emmy nomination for his portrayal of Pablo Picasso in Genius: Picasso (2018).

His Broadway role in Nine earned him a Tony Award nomination and a Drama Desk Award.

In 2017, he was honored with the Honorary Platinum Award at the Málaga Film Festival, and in 2019, he received the National Cinematography Award from Spain’s Ministry of Culture.

Other accolades include the European Film Award for Best Actor (Pain and Glory), multiple ALMA Awards for his contributions to Latin representation in Hollywood, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2005.

Banderas was also knighted by Spain’s Order of Arts and Letters in 2010 and received France’s Legion of Honour in 2011 for his cultural contributions.
